What is SSL?

SSL is security encryption. It creates an encrypted link between a Sozo Hosting Inc. web server and a user’s web browser. The link ensures that all information passed between the Sozo Hosting Inc.’s web server and user’s web browser remains private and secure and is recognized by millions of consumers by a secure padlock which appears in their web browser. The link uses an SSL Certificate that you have to purchase.

What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL certificate are digital signature files and installed on Sozo web servers. This simple fact allows e-Business providers an opportunity to leverage that increased trust level to turn visitors into paying customers. A CSR (Certificate Signing Request) is required to generate an SSL Certificate. Some hosting firms charge for CSRs however SoZo Hosting Inc’s CSR generation for SSL Certificates are included in the attractive prices in the table below.

How SSL Works?

SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data, first a public key known to everyone and the second is the private key known only to the recipient. SSL an unique and effective way to achieve data/ecommerce security. An SSL Certificate from Sozo Hosting Inc. only covers one domain such as www.yoursite.com. If you want it to cover a domain other than www.yoursite.com such as a subdomain then contact us. There are wild card SSL certificates (UCCs) that cover all subdomains under the main domain however these are more expensive and are for large web operations. You can click on this link: SSL Certificates and view the pricing on the WildCard SSL Certificates.

Why is an SSL certificate required?

Internet trends have boomed in popularity and are creating more opportunities for both commercial and non-commercial sectors. Purchase a SSL certificate for the number of years your web domain will be active. The 5 year certificates are cheaper on a yearly basis however you might only need a certificate for a year if it is a test site. You will be required to submit in electronic format (jpg or pdf files) proof of your organization’s name, address and current business status. This means a copy of your business license, yearly charter renewal form, sales tax document or other similar business documents will be needed to support that you and your business/organization address matches the web domain your SSL certificate is covering based on the information found in http://www.sozodomains.com/whois.php.  You should submit your electronic documents with a cover letter that explains what documents you have included in your submission and that you are purchasing the SSL certificate through SoZo Hosting Inc. It will be explained to you where to email these documents.  After your documents are received and reviewed, you will be emailed the SSL certificate in 3-5 business days given you have submitted the correct documentation. Whose responsibility is it to remind me when my SSL certificate will expire?

Sozo Hosting will also automatically email you when your certificate is going to expire if you bought your SSL Certificate from us.  If you did not buy your SSL certificate from us then it is your responsibility to manage the expiry date.

What is the difference between a temporary SSL certificate and an SSL certificate bought from an authorized SSL seller?

If you buy your SSL certificate from authorized SSL sellers like Comodo, VeriSign or Thawte, then when users go to your site using https://  they will not get a warning message.  If you use a temporary SSL certificate or try to generate your own SSL certificate then users when coming to your https:// site will get a message like:   “unknown certification authority”.

Can SSL Certificates be added if I have a shared IP as my hosting plan?

No.  If you need a SSL certificate you should buy a hosting plan that supports dedicated IPs.  Contact us to help you change your site from a shared IP to a dedicated IP.  There usually is a small cost of $5/month for a dedicated IP versus using the shared IP.
